Hay ebob-
I was thinking of sculpting a big thing- say... a cave drake. What should I use for a base?

You'll have to clarify what you mean by 'base'.

I think he means the plastic base on the bottom of a miniature.

I should think that was the least of your worries.

You could try something like the LOTR dragon were it has rocks attached to his feet and attach it there.

Pink polystyrene casts fine if you make a cold cure silicone mould. Personally I wouldn't worry so much about moulding bases - people will make their own base. Problem is if you cast the base in metal it'll weigh a tonne and double the costs for you. You could make a silicone mould and cast either plaster or resin bases - but again it's a pain in the butt frankly.
First things first, make a groovy dragon, and then consider the base if the dragon turns out good enough to cast. The dragon of course will need to be carved up into bits for casting.
Casting could be resin or metal.

I think what I'll do is to pput feet on rocks and sculpt a little flat area on the bottom of the rocks, so they can be mounted on a base, and if people are interested in buying them, I may find a site that sells big bases cheap and resell those with them. I have to sculpt it first of course, like ebob said! (it may suck, because sculpting is like painting in a way for me, a couple good models a couple bad models, although I have no previous models to show, I lost the box they were in. I'll post some WIP here hopefully by tonihgt or tommmorow! Thanks ebob and Sirhc!

Look at the Hirst Arts site under mold making. That should cover all your questions. That is how to make the mold. Look under quick guide for the begginer to learn to cast it.

This is a picture of the front of the first talon/foot, (I'm going to combine birds and reptiles for my vision of the dragon, not purely lizard like GW, but don't worry, it won't have feathers. Back Note: These are only the skeletal parts, detail (I don't know if it will be smooth or scaly, feedback please) will be added later, and will bulk it up. THe paperclip will connect to the leg.
