Ebob, are you considering your own range of Evil models to go alongside your TotE? I think that a Black Numerin (sp?) force would look quite impressive and orginal. Cheers mate

Tribes of the East aren't exactly what I'd call 'good' but I'd like to do an opposing force based on Medieval russians.

True, but they are not way-over-the-top evil.
Russians sound good, do you have any concept sketches?
I was under the impression that Cossacks are late Medieval, early Gunpowder units...

Genghis Khan is pretty much renown as being the most ruthless leader in history - perhaps not as sadistic as Vlad the Impaler - but nonetheless not squeemish when it comes to killing an entire city worth of women and children and boiling traitors in oil.
The Russians that fought the Mongols look pretty similar - chain mail furs and suchlike - I've ordered some books from Russia - unfortunately they're in Russian - so completely useless, but hopefully they appear to be well illustrated.

The Mongols made it all the way to Europe, fighting Teutonic knights and heavy cavalry. I think it was the death of one of the leaders that caused the army to turn back, as they had beaten all in their path.
Have you checked Osprey and any of the other UK/US historical reference publishers for books on the period?

Yes - I have the Osprey book - but to be honest the illustrations are few and not very inspiring.

Any new range of figures really needs to be LOTR compatible, for me anyway. How about Men of Dale, they fought 'historically' against easterling tribes, maybe basing them on generic feudal warriors to satisfy the history gamers.

On second thoughts, a generic range of norse/saxon type models would be cool. These could then be used as Dalemen or used as Rohan or proper Dunlendings, these would have a wide range of appeal to historical and LOTR players alike.

Chinese Warriors who fought against mongols would be nice, too. Maybe Japanese Warriors. I think one of his next projects will be Scottish warriors like in Braveheart. This would be ok for Dunlendings I think... The Russian Warriors would be nice too.

I saw Hero recently; the dark armour and the fantastic range of equipment wielded by the Chin army really is quite appealing.

Anything so long as I can use it for a cool, fun and decent LoTR army
