Making a wooden floor style base;
For Ebob’s towns folk
By Ollie
Materials:
Green stuff or alternate (must be soft)
1x miniature base
Chaos black spray paint (GW)
Scorched Brown (GW)
Graveyard earth (GW)
Chainmail / Mithril sliver (GW)
Equipment:
Standard sculpting tool
Paint brushes
Credit card
Introduction:
I came up with this idea a while ago but waited till I got some Ebob towns Folk. I advise you do the base separated from the model for example; paint the model on a different base, so the first time you put model and base together is when the model is painted and the base is finished.
Step 1
Place a reasonable sized ‘blob’ of Green stuff on to the base
Step 2
Smooth out the green stuff onto the base
Hint: when you smoothing out the putty make sure you do it with you fingers so you leave you finger prints, this when you dry brushing gives the look of 3D to the wood.
Step 3
Push out the putty from the inside slot
So you’re left with
Then cut away the excess
Step 4
Now were ready to begin sculpting the planks
For this part I uses my debt card thing, its up to you what you uses as long as it is roughly the same size.
Sorry the picture quality was not very good so I added some lines to show you the gapes. Ed note; Picture got lost somehow, apologies.
Hint: It doesn’t have to be accurate; if it’s a bit odd it looks traditional.
Now use the sculpting to do some small lines in the other direction, to give a brick effect,
So you end up with:
Now for painting!!!
Step 5
Spray black, try to ‘dust’ the base, this will stop the finger prints disappearing (CSI’s great), by the way you won’t see the finger prints properly until you dry brush it
Step 6
Dry brush the base in scorched brown, follow by dry brushing very lightly in graveyard earth,
Now add the nails by doting with Mithril sliver on the edges of the planks.
Step 7
Carefully place the model into the base, and wala! You’re done.
Conclusion.
I hope you enjoyed this article, don't forget to leave feedback!
*Ed note; It is also possible to just cut off the tab from the model’s feet, and then the whole base is done this way. Also, you could try slightly impressing bits of wood/tan-bark (little wood chips for the gardern) to get the wood grain feel.
Also, while I’m here; the Nails could also be done by very fine metal rod cut in to tiny pieces and pressed into the ‘wood’.
For painting, you can vary the colours by using different browns or Ink Washes.
