Irish Warriors : Dress and Equipment
I dabbled with putting together old medieval Tactica Scots, Irish, and English armies and picked up some reference material here and there but have to agree that there is not a lot out there. The prints on the web page you linked seem to pop up universally in any reference to the period along with the contemporary sketches leading to most agree, from such limited material, as to what the Galloglaich and Kern looked like. Some other sources I have stumbled on are …
Armies of the Middle Ages, Volume 1 by Ian Heath figures 28 -31 depict Irish warriors of the period and have a nice detailed summary of the black and white figures.
“The Normans” Osprey by David Niccolle plate F is a superb Angus McBride illustration of an Anglo-Norman Knight ambushed by a Gaelic Irish and Hebridean warrior.
Tim Newark’s Ancient Celts has a couple of Angus McBride plates of late Gaelic warriors.
Overall ….
The Kern would be very similar to the clansmen, adding baggy sleeves and a circular brat or mantle Over the leine seems to the most common dress while bare legs, long hair, long flowing moustaches, are a hallmark along with a targe and javelins. For variety a few “better” could have older Norman or Viking style “spangenhelm” helmet with a nosegaurd and a leather jerkin or mail shirt.
As a tidbit the Irish at this time were starting to be known for their saffron dyed tunics of a curious burnt orange - yellowish color whose process of making involved soaking in vats or urine … whether for the color or to help the dye settle in seems to be the basis of a huge “pissing” contest among the academics …..
The Galloglaich depicted on the web page are perfect, with a bascinet and coif, , that long knee length padded tunic with or without the armor over top, bare legs , and shoes being optional.
I do have the OG Irish and ….. Never painted them up except for a couple of the Kern … The quality of the casts is a little better than most OG but they all seem to be by a different sculptor and really don’t work together …. Not like your amazing figures do …..
Hope this helps a little and would love to see some of these sometime as what you have done so far is simply amazing !
