There was a recent post in the forum which gave me pause in submitting my first order to eBoB Miniatures. That forum posting indicated delays and lack of communication from eBoB. I wanted to share my experience as a counterpoint, since it was quite different and a very positive one.
My 14 year old son and I recently returned to miniatures painting as a fun way to share some father-son time. His interests lie in fantasy style models such as are done by Games Workshop and Privateer Press. My interests lie more in realistic, historical minis.
In order to find a miniature line to "call my own" and paint, I did the usual surfing of the web. In the process, I discovered that Osprey Publishing did a "Historical Miniature Showdown" in 2009. The finalists came down to Empress Miniatures and eBoB, with eBoB just missing top honors by 30 votes. In looking at the offerings at both Empress and eBob, the "Scottish Rebellion" line here quickly got my attention... it had exactly the type of models that I wanted.
I prepared my order but before placing it, I took a peek at the forum. It was at that time that I saw the post mentioned above and then my uncertainty rose. However what was promised in the "Scottish Rebellion" was too good to resist, so I contacted eBob to ask about availability. Bob Soutar quickly returned a response and promised to let me know what was immediately available if I provided my list. He followed this initial e-mail with a second explaining the situation with the metal casters, noting that it may take 2 to 4 weeks to get new castings if a piece is out of stock.
As it turned out, only a single miniature on my list was not readily available and in this case, Bob had a variant on hand. (This model was the Scottish Knight. Bob had a variant in which a single-handed weapon is held overhead rather than the two-handed weapon held in a lateral position.) He referred me to an online photo of the variant and explained the options that came with the piece.
Before my order was placed, Bob and I exchanged a number of e-mails as I inquired about the line and future pieces. In this process, I steadily grew my order as I became ever more interested in these miniatures and as I began to appreciate the attention that Bob gives his work. Evenso, my final order was only £35. Other models on my wish list were available too, but I figured this initial order would keep me busy at the painting table for some time.
I placed the order on August 11th and assumed a 2 to 4 week delivery time given my small town Colorado location in the United States. To my surprise, the box appeared on August 17th. And to my eyes, the models contained therein were every bit as good as what I had imagined from the website.
So that’s my story. While I certainly can’t vouch for others’ experiences, I know that for myself… I wouldn’t hesitate to place a follow-up order. The details on the miniatures are excellent and the arming options that come with many of the models are superb. And I do hope that others find this line as fascinating as I do. I think it would be fantastic if Bob could continue to expand it… Irish Kerns, Scottish Archers, Light Cavalry… the possibilities are tremendous.
Thanks so much, Bob! My son and I are sure to have a great time at the painting table. I can’t wait to begin on these and start to consider what might be next.
