Looking very nice except for the 3rd and 4th swordsman, a guy trained in the use of sword and shield would never fight like that with the shield behind the swordarm.

Well you can't shield and swing - so I was kind of imagining that he has just taken a swing - and maybe going to deliver a second back-hander.

Most of the English were in the 13th cent - they were all levies.

A large portion of the army was basically farmers asked to fight for the country

well, the English were mostly levies - under Feudal law each noble who pays homage to the King is obligated to provide an agreed no. of trained and equipped soldiers when the King calls upon his nobles to rally an amry. So they are press-ganged. They are paid when in service but not much. The English are then forced to march north to Scotland - which as you can imagine can take many weeks/months - moving at a maximum of 15 miles a day.
By the time they reach battle in the north they are tired, hungry and pretty fed up.
The Scots by contrast are on their own soil - and fighting for their homes against an agressor. They are highly motivated and under Wallace they are also well organised.

The tartan is just stripes - brown and green. I just do horizontal stripes - no need to cross them - it's enough to give the impression of tartan.
There will be 9 scots + Wallace.
The bases were done with milliput - and poked with the foot of a puppet and the end of a rod to make hoof prints. I'll add a small amount of grass later - but not too much - I want them muddy.

I like them except the first on the left--his head looks somewhat unnatural.

Amazing, great painting too...
A must add to my collection.
Though the front swordsman, he is not the captain i dont think?
Just a regular?
p.s: Nice bases.

correct - the captain and other variants are being cast as we speak.
What you can see here is the charge and hold game markers which will be used in the rules.
